Pakistan thrash India by eight wickets in U19 Asia Cup

The Pakistan U19 team produced a brilliant all-round performance to defeat arch-rivals India U19 by eight wickets in the fifth match of the ACC Men’s U19 Asia Cup 2023 at the ICC Academy Ground in Dubai on Friday.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, India U19 were bundled out for a paltry 147 in 39.2 overs, with none of their batsmen crossing the fifty-run mark. Raj Bawa (42) and Harnoor Singh (33) were the only ones to offer some resistance, as they added 66 runs for the third wicket after the openers departed cheaply.

Pakistan U19 bowlers were on top of their game, as they kept a tight leash on the Indian run-rate and picked up wickets at regular intervals. Shahzeb Khan was the pick of the bowlers, as he claimed three wickets for 25 runs in his eight overs, while Awais Ali chipped in with two wickets for 27 runs.

In reply, Pakistan U19 made light work of the target, as they reached 148 for two in 37 overs, with both their openers scoring unbeaten half-centuries. Azan Awais was the star of the show, as he smashed a magnificent 105 not out off 111 balls, studded with 11 fours and two sixes. He was well supported by Saad Baig, who scored a fluent 68 off 62 balls with six fours.

The pair added an unbroken stand of 148 runs for the third wicket, after Pakistan U19 had lost two early wickets for no score. Awais and Baig displayed a mix of aggression and caution, as they took on the Indian bowlers and kept the scoreboard ticking.

The win was a crucial one for Pakistan U19, as it boosted their chances of qualifying for the final of the tournament. They now have two wins and one loss from three matches, while India U19 have one win and two losses from three matches.
